Kykeon was a popular drink in ancient Greece that was made from a variety of ingredients, including water, barley, herbs and wine.  It was most famous for its use in the Eleusinian Mysteries, a ritual that took place at the city of Eleusis to commemorate the goddess Demeter's search for her daughter Persephone.

The exact purpose of the drink, "kykeon" in these rituals is still debated by classicists and archeologists, but it was believed to be very psychoactive. The fungus Ergot on the barley may have been responsible for the drink's psychoactive properties. Ergot and LSD are related in that ergot contains lysergic acid, a precursor to LSD.

In  the book "The  Road  to  Eleusis", co-authors R.  Gordon  Wasson,  Albert  Hofmann  and  Carl  A.  P.  Ruck

dig deeply into the chemical and cultural history and mystery of kykeon. Robert Graves and Terence McKenna posited that hallucinogenic mushrooms may also have been involved in the sacred rites.
